Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” may be a distant source for this story, but the realization is all Studio Ghibli in its splendid and touching beauty. Ponyo, a little goldfish mermaid, longs for life on land after she recognizes a soul mate in the human boy Sosuke, who saves her life. Sorcery makes her wish a reality, but her transformation throws the balance of land and sea into disarray, and Ponyo’s father, the gruff ruler of underwater kingdoms, is not pleased. 35mm. (BS)
