A LETTER TO MOMO
(MOMO E NO TEGAMI)
2011, Hiroyuki Okiura, Japan, 120 min.
“A milestone of traditional handmade animation…truly beautiful to watch.”
–Guillem Rosset, Twitch.com
“A beautiful, precisely crafted movie that both children and adults can enjoy.”
–Jay Seaver, eFilmCritic.com
Three mischievous goblins ease a young girl’s transition into a new life after the death of her dad in this poignant and often comic coming-of-age saga seven years in the making. Director Okiura (JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE) employed the talents of animation director Masashi Ando (SPIRITED AWAY) and art director Hiroshi Ôno (KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE) to create a handcrafted film that tenderly evokes the heartache of loss and the bumpiness of new beginnings. The naughty, fierce-looking spirits who tumble from an Edo-era book that Momo finds in the attic become her rambunctious guardians and links to another world. Presented in English with voices by Amanda Pace and Stephanie Sheh, and in Japanese with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
