From May 1 through June 4, the Gene Siskel Film Center presents Chicago premiere screenings of THE KINGDOM OF DREAMS AND MADNESS, a delightful, detailed and engaging look behind the scenes at Japan’s Studio Ghibli, where director Hayao Miyazaki rules his elite kingdom of artists and completes THE WIND RISES. Five of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved films are scheduled in companion screenings throughout the month.
While fans worldwide may fondly wish for the renowned animation studio to go on forever dispensing magic through extraordinary award-winning productions, animator Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement with the 2013 release of THE WIND RISES. At the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, Isao Takahata revealed that he considered THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA to be his final film. The two great masters take a well-earned rest, but the Ghibli legacy lives, and THE KINGDOM OF DREAMS AND MADNESS provides a worthy and revealing coda, documenting for the first time the inner workings, tensions, and rivalries of this unrivaled dream factory.
