Cosplay, short for “Costume Play”, is a form of art performed by participants wearing outfits themselves to define a specific character. Cosplay participants, aka “cosplayers”, mainly source their characters based on Japanese and East Asian media such as anime and manga. But over time it has expanded to mostly all ranges of media from around the world through comic books, video games, television, and more. Cosplay is viewed as a hobby to show off their own handmade creations, take photos, and possibly enter in costume contests. It expresses the freedom of the individual’s passion for the hobby and represents the character they are portraying as.
