A powerful 8.9 earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan at 2:46 p.m. JST on Friday March 11, 2011, and a series of aftershocks followed. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the initial earthquake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, while the U.S. Geographical Survey listed the earthquake’s magnitude at 8.9. A large tsunami hit Miyagi and other northeastern prefectures. The growing nuclear concerns after the earthquake and tsunami have resulted in may people being evacuated from their homes.
