Synopsis: Kinji Fukasaku, 2000 • Based on Koushun Takami’s novel of the same name, Battle Royale is a tale of teenage angst, rebellion, and most of all, bloodshed. After the collapse of Japanese society and the rise of a new dystopian state, a class of 42 ninth graders is subjected to the government’s new program aimed at curbing adolescent disobedience—that is to say, they are stranded on an island and forced to fight to the death. As the number of survivors dwindles, the thrill of Battle Royale comes less and less from the question of who will survive and more from the anticipation of the next gruesome, but undeniably entertaining death.
