Another Oscar nomination came Studio Ghibli’s way for this delirious fairytale based loosely on the teen novel by Diana Wynn Jones. A lovely but shy young hat-maker is transformed into a creaky crone by the jealous Witch of the Waste, punishment for catching the eye of the handsome wizard Howl. Against the background of a war between kingdoms, a journey to self-realization and love involves multiple transformations of body, landscape, and, not least of all, of Howl’s magnificent walking steampunk contraption of an abode. 35mm. (BS)

All screenings in English with voices by Jean Simmons, Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Blythe Danner, and Emily Mortimer.

Tasha Robinson, Associate Editor of The A.V. Club, will lead a discussion after the Thursday screening.
