Never before released in North America, THE OCEAN WAVES was created by ten young protégés of Studio Ghibli founding directors Miyazaki and Takahata. The film’s contemporary setting, flashback structure, and subtle color palette most closely reflect the influence of Takahata. En route to his class reunion, twenty-something Taku muses on the love triangle that introduced him to adolescent heartbreak as he vied with best friend Yutaka for the elusive affections of Rikako, the school’s pretty but heartlessly manipulative new girl. All screenings in Japanese with English subtitles.
